Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a child. Her aunt was a nurse, who did night shifts to ensure that she could devote her days to theatre and literature as well as art. DuVernay quickly fell in love with the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread social activism. DuVernay was taught to be socially conscious by her mother. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family was for many generations. Her father recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma be the inspiration for her later a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for broadcast journalism as a student. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage at the home of a member on the jury. When she was dissatisfied with journalism due to the work she was handed, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay began her first position as a publicist in a small production studio right out of high school. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
